The Magic of Māpua

Visitors and locals alike just love Māpua, a quaint coastal village in the Nelson Tasman district at the top of the South Island, only 3km from your stay at The Gates Accommodation. Māpua has everything you need for a great stay including a well-stocked 4 Square supermarket, a chemist, health centre, Sprig and Fern pub, brewery, a great wine bar that also does good pizza, numerous cafes, galleries, shops and renowned seaside restaurants. Plus of course there's the incredibly picturesque Māpua Wharf, famous for jumping off and for its excellent eateries, on the edge of the Waimea Estuary. The fabulous ferry to Rabbit Island and its long white sandy beach leaves from here and is a must do activity. The Great Taste Cycle Trail is 2km away via a cycle feeder trail from The Gates. There's just so much to eat, see and do, so come and experience the Magic of Māpua for yourselves.

Perfect Central Location

Staying at The Gates means you're central to everything there is to see, eat and do in the Nelson Tasman region. As well as soaking up the magic of Māpua there's more at nearby Upper Moutere, or go beaching close by at Ruby Bay and Grossi Point and Rabbit Island. Kaiteriteri or Tahunanui beaches are seriously impressive. Plus there are rivers galore, plenty of walks, and easy day trips into the three nearby National Parks of Kahurangi Mt Arthur, Nelson Lakes or the coastal Abel Tasman. Even gorgeous Golden Bay, with its famous Pupu Springs, Takaka township and Tata beach, is an easy day trip, as is Nelson only 30 minutes away. Then of course there's the Great Taste Cycle Trail, one of NZ's 'Great Rides'. Conveniently, a feeder path is right at the entrance to The Gates Accommodation. Stay at The Gates, eat, see and do and enjoy every bit!

Your hosts

Your hosts while at The Gates Accommodation are Adele Smith and Roger Waddell. Adele and Roger share a small 7-acre (2.4ha) farm with sheep, chickens, frogs, and many varieties of birds. They are Kiwis who've lived in the Nelson Tasman area for over 30 years and have extensive knowledge of places and activities that might interest you for your stay. You'll experience Adele's creative flair in all accommodations - Copper Gate with hints of heirtage and the romance of The Paris Suite; Corru Gate Cottage has Boho rustic-chic highlights and oozes rural iconic charm, and of course the famous Kissing Gate Escape with its gentle nod to Roger and Adele's early settler heritage. Adele and Roger have grown very fond of their slice of coastal, semi-rural paradise, often reminding themselves how lucky they are. They enjoy everything from sea-kayaking on the Māpua Estuary, tramping in the 3 local National Parks (Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes, Kahurangi), cycling the Great Taste Trail, cruising art galleries or visiting the many artisan studios, to having great coffee locally with friends, and heading out to movies and events.

Sustainability at The Gates

We 'walk the talk' with our accommodations. We model low-impact design, practices and environmental care in the areas of biodiversity, waste management, energy, water, construction - and more. Roger is an ex-sustainability advisor to businesses and schools and his and Adele's passion is evident in the land and Copper Gate, Corru Gate and Kissing Gate accommodations. We offer carbon offsetting through supporting local environmental biodiversity initiatives.

It's been fantastic!!! Loved your place so much --> had fun feeding the sheep, collected some eggs, went on bike rides to the vineyards, had dinner and enjoyed the stars in the sky at night. Adele and Roger, thank you for everything."
